This week marks National Immunization Awareness Week (NIAW)— a time to recognize the vital role vaccines play in protecting our health and strengthening our communities.

From preventing influenza, shingles and pneumonia to safeguarding at-risk populations and easing the burden on our health care system, adult immunization is a critical pillar of Canada’s public health and economic strength.

But access to adult vaccines remains inconsistent. Public coverage varies by province, and many Canadians are unaware of which vaccines they need or when they become eligible. A survey by Praxus Health found that 73 per cent of Canadians believe adult vaccines should be publicly funded, reflecting a clear consensus on the need for equitable access.

Evidence links vaccines to economic gains

A study by the Adult Vaccine Alliance (AVA), The Unmet Value of Vaccines in Canada, makes a compelling case: expanding adult vaccines access isn’t just good for public health—it’s an economic necessity.

The study estimates that adult vaccines currently contribute $2.5 billion in annual value to the Canadian economy and health care system. This includes:

  • $1.5 billion in labour productivity gains

  • $514 million in health care cost savings

  • Prevention of more than 3,000 premature deaths annually

Even a modest 10 per cent increase in vaccine uptake could raise annual benefits to over $3.1 billion, while reaching an 80 per cent uptake rate could generate nearly $6 billion in total economic and health care savings.

Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination program offers a clear example. It helped reduce missed work hours, ease pressure on hospitals and stabilize the economy during a critical time. Compared to a no-vaccine scenario, it saved billions of dollars—primarily through prevented deaths and reduced long-term health complications.

Vaccinations as a strategic investment

In today’s economic climate, where every dollar counts, expanding access to adult vaccines presents a high-value opportunity—one that protects public health, saves lives and delivers billions in economic and health care savings.

The numbers speak for themselves. According to The Unmet Value of Vaccines in Canada, every dollar spent on adult vaccination returns more than three times the value in economic and health benefits.

When more adults get vaccinated, fewer people miss work, hospitals feel less pressure and the economy benefits from a healthier, more productive workforce. Vaccines offer proven value—but new investments are needed to ensure universal access.

Advocating for vaccines

As we rapidly approach Canada’s federal election, conversations on the campaign trail have  focused on trade policy. But the ongoing crisis in health care remains a major concern. Canadians want action that supports both their health and their finances.

Vaccines should remain part of the conversation. By investing in immunization, governments can save billions while improving health outcomes, reducing hospital strain and enhancing workforce productivity. It’s a proven, evidence-based approach that delivers results and earns support across the political spectrum.

Prioritizing immunization for a healthier future

NIAW reminds us of the transformative power of vaccines. Beyond their undeniable health benefits, vaccines are a smart, strategic investment with far-reaching economic returns.

As Canadians grapple with concerns about the future of our health care system and economy, prioritizing adult immunization stands out as a proven solution on multiple fronts: It improves better health outcomes, boosts stronger productivity, and long-term fiscal sustainability. The path forward is clear — adult immunization is a proven investment in a healthier, more resilient economy for Canada.
