The Unmet Value of Vaccines in Canada
Increasing access to recommended adult vaccines is crucial for protecting population health and enhancing Canada's economy.
This study, conducted by IQVIA and commissioned by the Adult Vaccine Alliance (AVA) in fall 2024, demonstrates the overall value of adult vaccines to Canada’s health system and economy.
Key Findings
341%
For every dollar invested in adult vaccination, there is more than three times (341%) value returned in health and economic benefits.
$2.5 Billion
Adult vaccines have a major impact on Canada’s economy, currently saving over $2.5 billion annually in unnecessary health care costs and lost economic productivity.
+$685M
Even a modest 10% increase in vaccine uptake is shown to raise Canada’s annual economic and health care benefits to over $3.1 billion (+ $685M).
Adult vaccines effectively prevent illnesses that have the potential to add strain on Canada’s health care system and the economy, including avoiding unnecessary hospital visits and boosting economic productivity by keeping people healthy and working.
By improving access to routine adult vaccines through increased investments, we can enhance these health outcomes and economic benefits even further.
The vaccines studied are those that prevent COVID-19, seasonal influenza, shingles, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), human papillomavirus virus (HPV).
AVA is advocating for increased funding, access, and therefore ultimately uptake for adult vaccines across Canada.
An increase in the uptake of adult vaccinations in Canada is anticipated to lead to greater value for patients, the health system and the economy.
